Guidance for withdrawal from phenelzine and switching to another antidepressant has been released in a joint statement from the New Zealand Hospital Pharmacists’ Association: Mental Health Special Interest Group and the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

The dose of phenelzine should ideally be tapered down over a minimum of four weeks, followed by a two week washout period. Treatment changes need to be individualised for each patient. General practitioners should consult with a psychiatrist regarding treatment options and transition.
